In a recent commentary, Jon Stewart attempted to deflect criticism of modern economic policies by stating, "The energy is around a belief in their economic populism. And when you call it socialism, I think it's a misnomer - in the same way that calling Social Security socialism, that is kind of a misnomer." This rhetorical maneuver represents a sophisticated but ultimately deceptive strategy employed by today's progressive movement to obscure their true ideological foundations.
The comparison of contemporary progressive economic policies to Social Security is a textbook straw man argument. Nobody serious in policy debates today genuinely characterizes Social Security as socialism. This isn't merely because Social Security is popular or because it has existed for nearly a century, but because it fundamentally fails to meet the definition of socialism.
