Benjamin Rush, one of the signers of the American Declaration of Independence and often called the father of American psychiatry, pushed for more attention towards “diseases of the mind”. He published his observations in 1812, and here we are in 2025 – still playing catch-up. For decades, we’ve been talking about universal health care. Canada, quite rightly, takes pride in a publicly funded system. But let’s be honest: the “universal” part has long had a blind spot – mental health.
