Tony Dungy’s story is personal to me. I grew up in Pittsburgh, and the Steelers signed Tony in 1977 as an undrafted free agent. He transitioned to playing safety and spent the 1977 and 1978 seasons with the team, helping them win Super Bowl XIII.
Chuck Noll, who was the coach of the Steelers at that time, realized that Dungy had a great mind for the game, so in 1981 Noll asked Dungy to join the Steelers' coaching staff. Dungy was the Assistant Defensive Backs coach from 1981-1983, then moved into the Defensive Coordinator role from 1984-1988.
