Omar Mateen, the Islamic shooter who killed 50 people at an Orlando gay bar, had been on the FBI's radar because they believed him to possibly be an Islamic extremist. He was declared a "person of interest" in 2013 and 2014. The investigation was abandoned, however, because of a lack of evidence, according to the FBI.
FBI Director James Comey has been honest about the fact that the FBI has had Omar Mateen on their radar, yet the shooter was not being closely monitored, and he purchased two firearms legally without even the batting of an eyelid by federal officials.
