Before I get into the meat of it, we need to agree on a couple of things. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels wrote The Communist Manifesto in 1848. In modern times we refer to these ideals as Marxism. Communism is Marxism and Socialism is Marxism.
If there is an identifiable difference between communism and socialism it is that communism has most often been achieved by violent means while socialism is achieved by non-violent means. But make no mistake, governments under socialism or communism are exactly the same.
