Guests who stay for weeks or months need somewhere to keep their belongings, somewhere to be on their own and a place in the household routine, none of which a made-up spare bed provides by itself. The person might be a relative recovering from surgery, an adult child home while they save for a deposit, a student on placement or a child joining a foster family. What those situations share is that ordinary household habits stop being invisible. Where people eat, when the bathroom is free and who controls the heating all turn into things that need saying out loud.

Getting a home ready for that has less to do with decoration than with how space, storage and routine hold up over time. The work splits fairly cleanly into the room itself, the parts of the house everyone shares, the money side and the safety checks most households keep putting off. Sorting those before someone arrives is far easier than renegotiating them in week three.
