Look at the 1924 Immigration Act. From 1880-1920 we had massive immigration even from other parts of Europe, and it still created enormous economic and security stress, crime, threats to public order.

So we slammed the door with strict quotas. What they don’t teach you in school: from 1920 to 1970 we had FIFTY YEARS of negative migration. The foreign-born population dropped 40%. Meanwhile the overall U.S. population DOUBLED from natural American births.

That half-century pause is when a unified national identity was forged. Americans went through the Depression together, won world wars together, landed on the moon together.

All of it happened during a long stretch of virtually zero immigration.
