“Stupid is as stupid does.” These words were uttered and made famous by that great American philosopher Forrest Gump, in the movie by the same name. Until recently, I viewed these words as a cute slogan with a limited application in the real world. Not anymore! A few days ago, I received a short video that discussed German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s (1908 – 1945) Theory of Stupid. As a student of history, I keep finding that there isn’t much need for new intellectual input about human behavior. Everything about human nature has been known since biblical times by wiser men than anyone today.
In a previous article I discussed the phenomena of mass psychosis and how this has impacted American culture and values in our times. Coupled with the information that Bonhoeffer presented, we have a complete picture of our problems with human nature in 2022 America, Canada, and much of the world.The Comment section of online publications is the new front in the ongoing Cancel Culture Battle.

It seems to me we certainly are in the midst of the "Fourth Turning", as described in the book "The Fourth Turning: What the Cycles of History Tell Us About America's Next Rendezvous with Destiny" by William Strauss and Neil Howe - well worth the read. Written in 1995 or so, the book describes a cyclic pattern experienced for 700 years by western civilization - each 80+/- year cycle broken into 'turnings' (akin to seasons) with the fourth, or winter, turning being where all hall breaks loose. Well worth the read - their final chapter's predictions about the upcoming fourth turning (in 2020, again, as seen in 1995) are scarily spot on.
But the essence of the book can be compacted to the phrase:
The quote from the book is the following:
“Hard times create strong men.
Strong men create good times.
Good times create weak men.
And, weak men create hard times.”
Alas, 'twould seem we are at that last line of the phrase - our intellectually lazy, emotionally driven, soft populace has gotten us to this point of hard times.
