When Monica Lopez, 76, arrived home late on Thanksgiving night, the first sign that something was wrong was the side gate left standing open. Inside, the disruption was unmistakable. Her bedroom had been overturned, with clothing tossed across the floor, drawers pulled out and emptied, and shards of glass from a broken window littering the room, evidence of a break-in that had unfolded while she was away with family.
According to Lopez, the intruders had taken valuables, including her wedding ring and several thousand dollars she had planned to use for her mortgage payment.
