I love my parish where we receive on our knees, on the tongue. Where we sing the Gloria and Agnus Dei in Latin. Where our music is pipe organ and sometimes harp but never guitar. We silently pray before, during and after Mass. We dress modestly. We fund most of the pro life work in our area. You will not find a more reverent parish. We are in love with the Lord and his real presence in the sacraments.
Yet, many in our ranks are charismatics who prophesy, heal, and speak in tongues (not unlike the apostles in that regard). Our youth group is vibrant and for decades has launched many into religious vocations. While guitar Masses don't appeal to me today, I trace my love for Christ back to the guitar Masses of the early 1970s when that unbridled joy for the Lord did make God's love real for me. I still worship my Savior with guitar in hand - but not at Mass! We worship with guitars outside the sanctuary.
Don't strain the gnat and swallow the camel. There is a time and a place for guitars and charismatics and youth groups. Those things do not have to be mutually exclusive with sacred reverence and mystery. They can be done right to build God's kingdom and make his enemies his footstool.
