The People Around Cesar Chavez Knew What He Did. They Say Nothing

He knew the families Chavez was supposedly fighting for — Italian immigrants, Serbian immigrants, people who came from the Depression with nothing and built something with their hands. He picked grapes himself. He knew what the union actually was.

So on his first day of college at UC Santa Cruz in the early 1970s, when wealthy Los Angeles students demanded to know if his grapes were union, he had a simple answer: I own Them.

The response: Well, you're part of the problem. You're one of the grower incects.

These were students who had never picked grapes. Never set foot in a vineyard. Never met a farm worker. And they were absolutely certain they were on the right side of history.

VDH knew better. He knew that Chavez sabotaged driveways with nails, that his people used force when swarming fields, that he sent thugs to the border to stop illegal immigrants from crossing because they undercut union wages. He was associated with Synanon — a violent cult that used psychological torture as a management tool. He fired loyal white socialist volunteers as disloyal and retreated to his compound. People in the farming communities knew things were wrong. They talked about it. Nobody outside listened.
