The author writes a good article but makes one mistake. Pilate did not whip Jesus before sending Him to Herod Antipas. This occurred later as Pilate thought he could still save Jesus by publicly punishing Him but not executing Him.
For Pilate's part, he was corrupt, blood-thirsty, etc. His own sins brought him to the point of being on trial himself. He failed as a judge in the greatest trial of human history.
Most likely, Pilate did not have enough troops on hand to control the crowd and when he saw a riot breaking out, he sacrificed Jesus to save himself.
