I have had the great fortune to have friends and neighbors who grew up under various forms of communism. My former neighbors, who were raised during the communist occupation of Romania, blessed me and my wife with the opportunity to attend their and their children’s American Naturalization Ceremony. That is a ceremony every American citizen should attend at least once in their life. My other friend grew up in Guatemala during the time when most of Central America was involved in anti-communist civil wars. These three friends have provided me with three different perspectives on communism: One from a person who grew up with a father fairly highly placed in the communist government, one who was raised as a commoner in his communist society and one who grew up in a war torn communist society.
