Barbara Boyd opens with Barack Obama saying he sometimes fantasized about putting women in charge of every government, and a 1998 photo of Barack and Michelle Obama listening to Edward Said in Chicago, then takes a teaser tour of her new pamphlet on British-backed “color revolutions.”
The episode argues that Said’s intellectual heroes, Antonio Gramsci, Georg Lukács and the Frankfurt School, shaped today’s Democratic Socialists of America, and that their real target is the American System of Hamilton, Clay, Lincoln and McKinley, which Trump invoked in Louisville in 2017. It traces the pattern back through the French Revolution, which it presents as orchestrated by Lord Shelburne, Jeremy Bentham and Jacques Necker, through Lord Palmerston’s use of Giuseppe Mazzini and Karl Marx, and the 1917 Russian Revolution.
It closes with the Congress for Cultural Freedom, Daniel Bell’s post-industrial society, Herbert Marcuse and the “long march through the institutions,” arguing that winning the culture war means understanding the American culture under attack.
