‘Lest We Forget’ On the Way to be ForgottenA few things occurred in the lead up to the November 11 Remembrance Day ceremonies this year. These events are proof positive the day set aside for those who fought for Canada, many making the ultimate sacrifice, is on the way out. During these times it is simply too politically incorrect to honour the country’s military. The major occurrence was what Don Cherry, former hockey player, NHL coach and Canada’s number one patriot said on the Nov. 9 edition of Coach’s Corner. Cherry talked about how few people wear poppies these days. He said:

In this pathetic society, ruled by political correctness, the beautiful elites don’t care if his statement was true or not

“You people, you come here, you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple of bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price.” (Hockey Feed, Nov. 11)
Although his comments were made on Nov. 9, Rogers Sportsnet, waited until Remembrance Day to fire Cherry from the Coach’s Corner gig he held for almost 40 years. If the company had any respect for the military, they could have axed Cherry the day before or the day after. Cherry, once a columnist for Our Toronto, a predecessor to Canada Free Press, has no doubt been called a lot of things during his 85 years. But it is a safe bet he has never been called:
  1. one of the world’s greatest hockey players and
  2. erudite.
Cherry’s use of the English language is not the best and he often says “you people” that the left has decided is always racist. We should feel lucky, Cherry never says “yous guys.” Nonetheless, he did say “you come here” indicating he was in fact talking about people who have come to Canada as immigrants. In this pathetic society, ruled by political correctness, the beautiful elites don’t care if his statement was true or not.

The politically correct elite of course now prevent any discussion of poppies because it is anti-immigrant and racist

Rogers Sportsnet admitted Cherry could have kept his job if only he had apologized. In an era where people compete to see who can bow the lowest to the god of political correctness, he refused to do so. Cherry did later acknowledge if he had to do it over again he would have said “everybody” instead of “you people.” Whether he did in fact mean “immigrants” as appears from the words “come here” or everyone, what he said was the truth. Anyone in a city like Toronto who made a conscious effort to note who was wearing a poppy, it was mainly elderly white men and women. Older white people of course are the dregs of Justin Trudeau’s post-national state. But truth has no place in the Orwellian society Canada has now become. One person who did go out specifically looking for poppy-wearers was the Sun’s Anthony Furey. Walking through a subway car he counted about 60 people, only one of whom, an elderly woman, was wearing a poppy. (Toronto Sun, Nov. 12) The politically correct elite of course now prevent any discussion of poppies because it is anti-immigrant and racist. But immigrants, especially those who refuse to assimilate, are not the only ones whose members include very few who wear poppies. It was difficult to find a young person wearing one. Young people are indoctrinated to believe the West in general and Canada in particular is bad. Many of those who have heard about World War I and II believe war is bad. The military are a bunch of evil baby killers. And many of these young people are second and third generation immigrants who are taught Canada, the country of their birth, is worse and much less important than the country their parents or grandparents came from. The following are two recent examples of how members of the teaching trade treat the day meant to honour the sacrifice of the men and women who served in Canada’s military. On the Friday before Remembrance Day, a high school in Ottawa received a threat written in one of the school’s washrooms. The threat indicated there would be a shooting or a bombing at the school on Nov. 11. Principal Brent Hopkins gave the usual blather about how very, very, very, very, seriously they take these types of threats.

Schools will never honour Remembrance Day because it might “offend” some people

So what does Hopkins and his cabal of union workers do? They cancelled Remembrance Day ceremonies scheduled for that day. But, the school remained open to ensure a potential shooter or bomber had easy access to the building and a bunch of students (and some people wonder how Justin Trudeau got re-elected). The threat was obviously made by one of “you people” who hates the fact our military was to be honoured. And the school caved to these haters. What a total disgrace! (CTV News, Nov. 9) Parents in Burlington, Ontario, outraged at what their children’s school did, went to the media. Traditionally, a moment of silence as well as a ceremony is held at 11 am. This coincides with the time of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I; the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The school told the parents it was “inconvenient” to hold the ceremony at that time and held one later. To the politically correct union workers it was no big deal. The children’s father, who served in Afghanistan, said he would be upset even if he was not a member of the military. The parents plan to keep their children out of school on future Remembrance Days and teach them the significance of November 11. (CTV News, Nov. 14) Schools will never honour Remembrance Day because it might “offend” some people. There is no doubt when Don Cherry and elderly old stock Canadians, so detested by the left, are gone Remembrance Day will be no more. Its total demise is inevitable. Perhaps the formal ceremonies put on by various levels of government should end now. It would at least end the hypocrisy of seeing military-hating left-wing politicians wearing poppies and pretending they care about the sacrifices Canadians have made and are still making.
