“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” -- Dietrich Bonhoeffer
In a recent interview Elizabeth Farah (World Net Daily) spoke with Lorenzo Sewell, a pastor in Dearborn Michigan, about the growing problem of Islam in America[1]. During the conversation, they talked about the silence of the church in the face of a growing Islamic threat.
The silence is much wider than the threat of Islam, it encompasses the disintegration of our culture. I list some of the things that have radically changed in our culture upon which the church has been silent.
The song, “The Sound of Silence”[7], was release in 1965 and was an immediate hit. The song includes the lines
“Fools,” said I, “You do not know
silence, like a cancer, grows
Silence grows like a cancer and it has spread throughout our culture to the point where everyone is afraid to speak out against the spreading evils in our land. Post something pro-life on social media and you will be pounded by the voices of the left, so people are bullied into silence. In the UK, police are searching for someone posting “White Lives Matter” graffiti[8]. As the silence grows, evil grows, with one even calling for the extermination of Trump supporters[9].
This is part of the problem, but there is a much bigger problem. The internet says this about the song.
“The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel is a profound reflection on modern alienation, the failure of human connection, and the danger of emotional indifference.
Throughout all of this, the church has been silent. There is the odd voice decrying the decay[10], but it is far and few between. In all, the church is indifferent to the growing evil around it.
The indifference has come because we have grown lazy and fat. We do not have to spend hours in the broiling sun to bring in crops to feed the family. We do not have to work a yoke of ox to prepare the fields for sowing. Technology has taken all the heavy lifting so that we do not have to work so hard. Unfortunately, the ease of life has brought in isolation. Social media, entertainment mass media makes isolation easy, but with isolation comes a loss of human connection and leads to indifference.
The church today has kicked God out. It does not need Him. With savvy business practices and tailored messages, the church is growing fat. The Bible warns about this.
Deu 31:20 For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and waxen fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant.
The church has become smug and self-satisfied. One can imagine Jesus, through the song writers, speaking to the church
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But the church is doing alright without you. We don't need you. This attitude speaks of a lukewarm faith, and remember Jesus' words to the church of Laodicea, a church that had grown fat and lukewarm.
Rev 3:15-18 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
16then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. 17Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
He said that He would spew them out of His mouth. I am afraid that same fate awaits us.
Isolation has grown to the point where the church has completely withdrawn from the world. Ravi Zaracharias. in “Deliver Us From Evil”[11], talked about the church closing its doors to the world, looking inward, wagging its finger at the decay outside the door, but doing nothing to stop the slide.
This includes our civic duty. The church views politics as a dirty business, but that is because the church has withdrawn and left politics to the rascals and the scoundrels. In the 1990s, politicians carried Bibles under their arm to give the impression they were Christian, but they were hardly that. Cultural Christianity is widespread, people Christian in name only. I should know, I was one of them. One day my wife and I got into an argument and at one point she asked “You do believe in God don't you?” to which I said “Of course I do”. I was baptized, confirmed, schooled in Anglican Catechism, an altar boy. I continued on with some blather about how He is out there, remote. Needless to say, she was not happy with that answer.
The church has abandoned it role as salt and light and as watchmen on the wall. The Bible has dire warnings for those who abandon their post, such as Ezekiel 33:6.
But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.
There is much blood on the hands of the church for not speaking out. Abortion itself has claimed the lives of 66 million in the US, and we will have to answer for all that innocent blood. And about saltiness, Jesus said
Mark 9:49-50 For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. 50Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
The church has lost its saltiness, its ability to preserve the culture. The culture has degraded. Ask someone on the left if they support women's rights and they will say yes. Ask if they support trans rights and they will again say yes. But transgender athletes are relegating women athletes to second class status. These incoherent ideas are leading to fractured minds, fractured people, a fractured nation. We have come to the horror of the song by King Crimson, “Twenty First Century Schizoid Man”[12]. The church needs to inject itself into the culture, to rub salt in the wounds and bring healing to the nation, a return to a coherent worldview and a foundation of truth.
We need to come out of our lukewarmness. We need to recapture some of the zeal we had back during the Jesus revolution, before we were distracted by the myriad spiritual fads that have come and gone. We need Godly leaders. For that to happen we need Christians involved in civic leadership, from the municipal to the federal. The alternative is to continue to do nothing and wind up with the same rude awakening that awaited Martin Niemöller doing the Nazi regime:
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out--because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out--because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.
We at least need to vote. The number of Christians not voting is appalling[13]. Elizabeth Farah called not voting a “sin”. She said that her husband would never allow her not to vote. But Christians say “We are too spiritual to govern, Let the “Pagans” (Marxists Islamists Atheists) do it.” We have done just that and look where we are today.
She also said that when we vote, we need to vote for the right person. Voting for the right person means getting involved with the primary process, the forum for selecting candidates. We need to be involved at all levels of government and not hand over the keys to the “Pagans”. We need to be involved in our school boards to vet the curriculum our children are exposed to. We need to be involved in the direct education of our children. My wife sat with her young niece and very quickly had her sounding out words and reading her own story books.
If we are to take back the nation, we need to be involved. We need to pray, but beyond prayer we need to act, waiting on the Holy Spirit to guide our steps. It will take initiative. but once you get going, it will get easier. Writing these articles is what God has put on my heart, an answer to my prayer “What shall I do for the coming harvest”.
John 4:35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
The harvest is coming and Jesus needs all hands on deck.
Luke 10:2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
We need to talk to our neighbours and share the love of Christ. I remember back in the 1970s when new believers, filled with zeal, would share the gospel with anyone and everyone. It is our testimony that wins people, the story of what God is doing in our lives. We don’t need to be apologists.
During the renewal, many churches offered classes in evangelism. There is a story of a young believer, new to the faith, who had signed himself up for one of these classes. As he was going home, he sat on a bench at a bus stop next to an elderly lady. In his enthusiasm of his new found faith, he shared what God was doing in his life. His story was so compelling that the woman wanted to be saved, right then and there. He thought, I haven't taken the classes, I don't know the Four Spiritual Laws, I don't know how to do this. The point is: he had done it, and so should we all. We at least need to sow seed that one day will produce fruit.
John 4:37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
