Amazing men

70 years after his first jump, Jim 'Pee-Wee' Martin parachutes into Normandy - again

How tough were the men who pressed into Hitler's Europe 70 years ago? So tough that they can still do it today.

Most people will never leap out of a plane. Fewer will drop from the sky behind enemy lines, and then fight as a part of "histoy's largest armada." Paratroopers are a special kind of tough. Those who jumped as part of the Normandy invasion - surrounded by the enemy the second they hit the ground - even more so. Apparently, Jim "Pee-Wee" Martin would like to serve as proof that cojones like that don't disappear - even after seven decades. So yesterday, just as he did on June 6th 1944, Jim "Pee-Wee" Martin invaded France. ...at the age of 93. Asked if yesterday's jump reminded him of his WWII jump, Martin was succinct. "It didn't," he said. "Because there wasn't anybody shooting at me today." Martin says he feels "a little bit of ego" because he's "93 and can still do it." We'd say his ego is well deserved and, whether he likes to admit it or not, it was more than earned 70 years ago.
