Prelude: It's Everybody's Battle

A knock at the door

Having known of these article's comprising "A KNOCK AT THE DOOR" for many years gives me pride for someone as reserve and timid as the writer was, acting and speaking within his abilities for his family and his country of birth and thought, Cuba. However that is not my reason for bring the words back afresh.

I found that many of the threats that were faced by my wife Martha and her father now creeping into that which we have "National" pride, The United States of America. Certainly back in the days of the 50s and 60s one of the words that could still be used in a "Politically Correct" way was "Communist". The same definitions and promises of democracy, economic equality, peace and education are being spouted much with the same "lies" that varied party Socialist and Extreme Liberals are pushing today. The warning is there. Just look at the rapid "change", its effect and compare. In retrospect of the past Jose my father-in-law saw in 1962 what we have to worry about today. A KNOCK AT THE DOOR

- Dr. José Antonio Serra You Americans argue very much about communism. I don't wish to get into your arguments. I only know what happened to my native country when Communist betrayed her, and I know what happened to me. I hope that by telling this story I may help some of you understand how communism kills a nation and destroys people. Many Americans I have talked with do not seem to want to face reality. They know what befell the nations of Eastern Europe. But somehow they fail to see the classic pattern of Red conquest just 90 miles from their own shores. Here is what happened in Cuba: The Reds won public confidence by promising to form a democratic state. they took power and junked the promises. They formed a militia to enforce their will. They created an army of informers to control public thought and weed out political enemies. They set in motion a propaganda machine to confuse and brainwash the people. They "reformed" the schools and poisoned the mind of the young. They terrorized their enemies by attacking church, business, professional groups and by killing, jailing and harassing individuals. They seized control of the economy by confiscating businesses, farms and homes. They consolidated their power under the firm grasp of old-line Communist. Finally they began to use the Communist Nation thus formed, as a base for exporting communism to other countries. You say : "It can't happen to us." That is exactly what we said. But it did happen to us. It can happen to you. Cuba is just a sample of what the Communist propose to do to the rest of the Americas. Khrushchev said he will bury all of us who believe in the free way of life. In Cuba he has turned a big shovelful of dirt, and he will turn more. The question facing the United States is do you intend to let Moscow determine the destiny of this hemisphere? It is a mistake to say that the conquest of Cuba by the Reds is too bad but really not significant strategically. Cuba is located at the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico at a distance by commercial jet of less than 15 minute from Florida, and of about 20 minutes to the coast of Mexico. It is less than three hours from the Panama Canal and less than four hours from most of the cities on the East Coast of the United States. Cuba is ideally located for physical assault as well as propaganda assault, which she is already carrying out against her neighbors. Cuba is an arsenal and distribution point of Communist weapons. Except for the United States, Cuba now has more military might than any other republic in the Americas. And a former Soviet general, Enrique Lister is a top adviser on the use of this strength. Last January (1962) when Castro spoke in Havana reiterating his Marxist-Leninist sentiment, Communist Leaders from Latin American countries sat on the reviewing stand with him while Soviet weapons paraded down the street. One Latin American country recently received from Cuba a ship loaded with cans labeled "preserved fruit." While be lifted from the hold of the ship, some of the cans broke open. The :"fruit" inside turned out to be grenades. Cuba has received 200,000 modern small arms from the Communist bloc and has released older weapons, made in the west, for subversive operations elsewhere in the hemisphere. On good authority, shipments of these weapons have entered Nicaragua, Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Ecuador. Castro's promises for a better life for all have touched a responsive chord in millions of innocent hearts in Latin America. These millions have yet to learn the tragic lesson that Cuba has learned about communism. The communists are doing everything they can to exploit the hope and trust. They want very badly to communize another Latin American nation very shortly. They want to show a "vote of confidence" in the Cuban revolution. Every large city of Latin America has been disrupted by demonstrations of violence of Fidelista mobs. Communist agents are working in every Latin American country. All this is in keeping with Fidel Castro's promise in a speech in Havana on February 4, 1962. that revolution will sweep Latin America "like a march of giants". "The imperialist", he warned, "had better resign themselves to the idea which they fear so much.....Socialist revolution, which someday will knock on their door." This was no idle boast. The Communist takeover of Cuba is "A KNOCK ON THE DOOR" of the hemisphere. The battle of the America's has already begun. Let me tell you some personal experiences which will help you understand what the battle means to you as an individual human being.
