I have a soft spot in my hard heart for private protectors. Theirs is a salt of the earth calling causing these essential workers to be first defenders when trouble starts, unlike distant, politically demoralized, depopulated police officers.
On pre-dawn walks to work, I stop by a 24-hour national chain pharmacy to chat with its two-fisted overnight security officer who also bodyguards rappers during performances.
He's representative of what I've always promoted regarding this profession: private protectors must be professionals who can actually protect lives and property.
Observing and reporting simply isn't effective anymore.
Especially as society indulges the infamous and insane to extreme detriment of residents, tourists and patrons of battered businesses like the one this guardian protects from aggressive shoplifters and robbery.
Into this vacuum quiver timid corporations who must embrace reality, in this instance private protection officers like this highly capable overnight pharmacy security officer, I check on.
Welcome to 21st century instability. An enabling ideology has emboldened "urban predators," to borrow a buddy's favorite phrase, to such an extent that corporations are hitting the road for calmer climes. Cities have become too lethal and larcenous even for enablers.
An article below on retail security written by a leading insurer of security companies further makes this point:
Retail Security: Once an Option, These Jobs are Becoming a Certainty
Many retailers still haven't embraced protective reality. They allow themselves to be stolen into debt, telling staff to impotently watch thieves and-insult-to-injury-are also punching bags told not to engage in self defense.
You don't have to be a security industry insider nor a protection professional to arrive at this conclusion: a seized society needs private protectors who can actually protect lives and property.
Keep that in mind next time you stroll into a supermarket, pharmacy or other public facing business.
