Antarctic and Greenland Defying Alarmists

The continent of Antarctica is a difficult ground for climate apocalypse fanatics since there has been barely any overall warming over the last 70 years. The exception is West Antarctica where there has been some local climate variation, possibly helped by significant geothermal activity. ⁽¹⁾

Even though atmospheric CO2 rose from 337 ppm in 1979 to 420 ppm in 2022, there is no evidence of a warming trend across Antarctica during this period. ⁽²⁾

Forgotten aerial photos from 1937 have given researchers at the University of Copenhagen the most detailed picture of the ice evolution in East Antarctica to date. The results of this comprehensive analysis: the ice has remained stable and even grown slightly over a century. The area covers approximately 2000 kilometers of coastline and contains as much ice as the entire Greenland ice sheet. ⁽³⁾

Recent data have been reported for 10 Antarctica stations under operation scattered along the Antarctic coastline. These results are not impacted by volcanic activity. Results—zero warming.

The Ross Sea was also sufficiently ice free to allow for elephant seal populations (as large as ~200,000 individuals) to thrive. Today, however, elephant seal populations, which require extended seas ice free sea waters to breed, forage and provide nourishment for their pups, can no longer subsist anywhere even remotely close to the coasts of the Antarctic continent. It is now too cold and the sea ice is too extensive. ⁽⁴⁾

Ice Shelf Collapse

Ice shelf collapse was much more pronounced and exceptional millennia ago than it has been over the last 47 years.

Here’s an example of a typical media scare. In July 2017, CNN and a number of other media outlets posted stories about iceberg A-68 calving off Antarctica’s Larsen C Ice Shelf, with CNN suggesting we should be ‘freaked out’ about it because of climate change. CNN was wrong. It was based on an incomplete understanding of iceberg formation and calving, driven by a rush to judgment to further the false climate disaster narrative. ⁽⁵⁾

Anthony Watts says, “The climate chicken littles of the media blamed it on climate change then, but a new peer-reviewed study says it wasn’t anything abnormal, nor should we worry about it. The new study tosses ice-cold water on those who overhyped media claims.” MacKie et al analyzed 47 years of observational satellite data from Antarctica and found there has been no trend in annual Antarctic maximum calving size between 1976 and 2023. In other words, the media made a big ado about nothing. ⁽⁶⁾

Medieval Warm Period

The Medieval Warm Period, the natural warm phase between 700 and 1300 AD, cannot be reproduced in climate models because the simulations react primarily to CO2. Back then CO2 was not a factor because its concentration level in the atmosphere was pretty much constant. That’s why people would rather keep the Medieval Warm Period quiet. ⁽⁷⁾

But the facts speak for themselves. Two studies now add further pieces to our knowledge of this medieval climate. This research shows the Medieval Warming Period may have root causes in ocean currents and shows population studies of sea life to back it up. These natural processes are still taking place today and have by no means ended with the start of the CO2 increase. ⁽⁸⁾

Greenland

The Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) is incredibly large, covering 80% of Greenland in a dome of permanent ice, 1.7 million km2 and 2-3 km thick at its peak. Compared to US states, it’s something like the area of Texas, California, New Mexico, Arizona and Montana combined, covered in kilometers of ice. Estimates put it at 2.85 million cubic kilometers of ice in a region that is 3 times the size of Texas

After a careful study of 31,464 satellite records compiled over the last twenty years, a team of scientists and mathematicians from Thailand has announced that the temperatures in Greenland have been declining for at least twenty years. ⁽⁹⁾

This is big news but probably will never see daylight in the mainstream media, who have been subjecting us to a continual barrage of propaganda that Greenland is melting.

Another study confirmed that Greenland has been cooling for several decades. ⁽¹⁰⁾

So, this is significant, encouraging news that should put a final nail in the coffin of the climate change scam.

On August 29, 2022, Greenland gained a record smashing 7 gigatons of snow/ice, a reading that would be impressive at any time of the year, but one that entered the books as the largest ever daily gain during the summer, with data extending back to the 1980s. ⁽¹¹⁾

Greenland refuses to defy alarmist party orders, refusing to melt as prophesied.

And while it is true that the Greenland ice sheet lost mass from around 1995 to 2012, that trend of loss has now reversed almost completely. Greenland has been on an upward trajectory ever since.

The temperatures in Greenland’s coastal areas have indeed risen somewhat, but this could be attributed to the rise in population in those areas.

One reason that some parts of Greenland could still be warming a little is that the North Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation has shifted, causing more warm ocean water to brush its shores.

There is also geothermal activity in the southeast past of the island. Some believe there may also be sites of volcanic activity under the glacier.

Past History

Evidence of abundant lakes and ponds and the remains of vascular plants, warmth-demanding beetles, sponges, and spruce forests, in a newly discovered organic rich deposit 480 m above sea level in High Arctic and Northwest Greenland indicates the local climate was similar to today’s Southern Greenland and North America during the early Pleistocene ice age. ⁽¹²⁾

About two million years ago (Early Pleistocene), CO2 levels were estimated to have hovered around 300 ppm, which is yet more evidence CO2 does not drive temperature.

A glacier site in Northwest Greenland, Pingorsuit, sits 480 m above sea level. It is currently covered in continuous permafrost that is still 25 cm thick in July. Modern mean temperatures only reach 1-2 C here.

Greenland has been defying the climatic narrative for decades now.
