A sculpture of a famous Newmarket winner is nearing completion.

A life size example of Mafki, sculpted by Edward Waites (25) from Cambridge will be exhibited at Chelsea Flower Show between May 20 and May 24. It has already been exhibited at the Guineas Festival in Newmarket earlier this month. The Mikel Delzangles-trained three-year-old was a hugely impressive winner of the Newmarket Classic in 2010 and enjoyed further Group One glory by defeating the mighty Goldikova in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.

“Makfi won the guineas in 2010 and now stands at a stud called Tweenhills,” explains Edward. “He is owned by Sheikh Fahad al thani from Qatar. I will be showing the piece at the Guineas and the piece will be presented to Sheikh Fahad on the day.” The metal structure took Edward three weeks to construct with the clay part taking the same amount of time to build. “I have chosen to sculpt Makfi as I have already sculpted his sire Dubawi and they share a few characteristics. Makfi has a handsome head with a wide jaw and a strong form.” www.edwardwaites.com
