In the shadow of the White House, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., joined prominent Christian groups in calling for President Obama to help rescue Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag, the 27-year-old mother sentenced to death in Sudan for refusing to renounce her Christian faith.

“There are assaults on religious liberty across the globe, and Christians, in particular, are being persecuted across the globe,” Cruz said. “We need far more leadership speaking out about the religious liberty of everyone, and especially for Christians who are being targeted for persecution, for murder. The case of Meriam Ibrahim is startling.” A crowd of more than 100 representing the Institute on Religions and Democracy and the groups International Christian Concern and Open Doors joined the two lawmakers in front of the White House, Brandishing signs pleading for Ishag’s release.
