If a woman, alone except for minor children, can't defend herself from an unknown male jumping out of her closet- what's the point of Louisiana self-defense law applying here in the war zone named New Orleans?
Single Black mothers can't afford off duty police nor private security patrols to be on call in their neighborhoods. They don't have the status to have a priority assigned to their besieged communities. They don't have lobbyists and polished spokes people to plead their case in city hall or courtrooms.
All they have is themselves, just like the rest of us hostages in this unsafe city.
It's tragic the young man who died was there without her knowledge. This is a yet again another teaching moment for young Black men about how deeply they must consider the consequences of their actions.
That said, it's beyond tragic to punish her as an ongoing political message to New Orleans Black community that we aren't American enough to defend ourselves.
She was indicted two years after this incident and one has to wonder why?
Fortunately, proponents of prevention and protection advocates like myself agree: indicting Ayanna Taplette is a gross miscarriage of justice.
I've always said self-defense is the final frontier of civil rights progress for American Blacks.
Cases like this are a barometer about how far-or not-we've truly progressed in society... especially in progressive ( ? ) cities like New Orleans.
