Balsa (Ochroma pyramidale) is highly prized for blades because it's very lightweight yet strong and resilient. It's ideal as a core material sandwiched between fiberglass layers. A single modern offshore blade (up to 100 meters long) can require several tons of balsa, equivalent to dozens of mature trees. A surge in demand for wind turbines—particularly in China—has driven the lion's share of fresh global demand. Balsa hunger has spread across Europe and North America.
The balsa rush began in Ecuador in 2018-2019, which dominates global supply and exports 75-95% of the world's traded balsa. Annual volumes average around 56,000 tons a year. The balsa boom has seen exports rocket to a record $402 million in 2020. China uses 85% of it for its turbine manufacturing push (aiming for 1,200 GW of wind/solar capacity by 2030). But this has outstripped plantation-grown supplies, triggering illegal logging in the Amazon basin, social conflicts with Indigenous communities, like the Waorani and Achuar, is ground zero for chaos, causing environmental damage in protected areas like Yasuní National Park.

Blade-makers are slowly shifting to PET/REC foam and other synthetics, but the transition is years behind the deployment curve—leaving the Amazon to pay the difference for now.
Balsa prices have doubled or tripled by mid-2020, fueling a black market rush and balsa fever has depleted coastal plantations and pushed loggers deeper into rainforests, even spilling over into Peru. Ecuador's exports have stabilised or declined as prices fall and regulations tighten from better traceability requirements from the government. A fresh investigation by the Environmental Investigation Agency in October 2024 reveals persistent problems. A November 2025 report tied this directly to ongoing rainforest plunder, a 'dirty secret' ahead of COP30.
This example underscores how wind/solar scaling can inadvertently export environmental and social harms to biodiversity hotspots like the Amazon. It highlights how material bottlenecks can undermine aggressive deployment targets without due diligence over diversified tech paths or stricter supply-chains.
