Reading the rules counts

Behold history's worst Olympic halfpipe run. ...Also, oddly, one of history's best

Meet Elizabeth Swaney Meet Elizabeth Swaney. She's a thoroughly average skier, probably no better than anyone you could find at your average, regional, Mount Trashmore. Unlike your average skier, she just competed in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in women's ski halfpipe. Thanks to her ability to read the rules, she figured out a way to qualify while having little actual ability.
Basically, it goes like this: Each country can send a maximum of four women's halfpipe competitors. For some countries, that means cutting good skiers and only taking the four best. For other countries, that means sending an empty slot because you simply don't have four women who compete in the sport. The latter was the case in Hungary. The International Ski Federation (FIS) sets the guidelines for the sport, and they've mandated that anyone hoping to qualify for the games must finish in the top 30 in a World Cup Skiing event and accumulate a set number of FIS points. That's fairly easy, since many women’s halfpipe events have less than 30 competitors. Enter Swaney. She competed in several World Cup events, finished in the top 30 by not falling, racked up some points, and was all set. Technically, she's a Californian, but her grandparents are Hungarian. That tenuous connection is good enough for the IOC, so Swaney was allowed to compete. Her run is....well....it's something.

I suppose I could get in the weeds about how there are better Olympic hopefuls who were denied a slot, while Swaney was goofing around - but I'm not going to. Honestly, I think this is kind of great. I love the baffled announcer trying to identify what "tricks" she's attempting, I love that something like this can actually happen, and I love that someone Swaney decided she wanted to do something - and just did it. I have a hunch that the rules will change to make sure this doesn't happen again, so I say Bravo to the worst halfpipe run we're ever likely to see. Eddie the Eagle would be proud.
