High court Judge Chinembiri Bhunu said ruling in the treason trial has been held up by what he termed “technical delays.” Justice Bhunu said he was “supposed to deliver the judgment today (Wednesday)” but said interruptions in preparing the transcript necessitated the postponement. “The judgment could be ready in the second week of May,” said Justice Bhunu. The decision means that as the MDC treasurer general waits for another D-Day in May on charges that he plotted to assassinate President Robert Mugabe, he will have to appear again in April for different charges of flouting the Grain Marketing Board Act. Bennett’s lead lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa, told journalists outside the court that the new charges are a form of “harassment” on her client adding that the state anticipates that he has no case to answer in the treason charges hence are coming up with new charges. Bennett has been in and out of court since February 2009, in what his MDC party believe are trumped up charges by their Zanu PF counterparts in the inclusive government.
