B’nai Brith Calls on Quebec Police to Investigate Recent Vandalism as a Hate-Motivated Crime

MONTREAL, – B’nai Brith Canada is calling on Sûreté du Québec (SQ), Quebec’s provincial police, to investigate as a hate-motivated crime this weekend’s break-ins and vandalism targeting Jewish cottages in Quebec. At least 14 Jewish-owned homes in Val Morin were vandalized with swastikas and antisemitic messaging in a series of break-ins over the weekend. In 2005, a similar incident occurred at the nearby Val Morin Synagogue.

“We are calling on SQ to investigate this attack as a hate-motivated crime,” stated Allan Adel, National Chair of B’nai Brith’s League for Human Rights. “The targeting of the Val Morin Jewish community shows that antisemitism continues to be a matter of growing concern, even though some refuse to accept this sad reality. Acts of hate targeting the Quebec Jewish community remain an ongoing problem, and must be investigated as such. "We are in close contact with Val Morin community leaders and local politicians, as well as SQ, in order to ensure the perpetrators of this attack are brought to justice and to send a clear message that acts motivated by hate will not be tolerated in the province. The professionals at B’nai Brith remain prepared to assist the community and the authorities in every way possible.”
