Fighting Holocaust denial necessary to make commemoration meaningful

B’nai Brith Canada marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day

TORONTO – B’nai Brith Canada has called on countries around the world to join in a concerted effort to fight Holocaust denial as a tangible way of marking the UN's International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

“This year marks 66 years since Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz, the death camp where over one million people were murdered at the hands of the Nazis. And yet today, under the guise of free speech, Holocaust deniers desecrate the memory of the victims of the Nazi atrocities to further their own agendas," said Frank Dimant, CEO of B'nai Brith Canada. "It is alarming that in 2011, those who would distort history are allowed to speak in our colleges and universities, and in other public fora. "We must shore up our efforts to stop this hate-filled rhetoric in its tracks, and ensure that Holocaust denial is never given the legitimacy it seeks. We are pleased to be at the forefront of this battle through this country's National Task Force on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research, which was convened by B'nai Brith's League for Human Rights and funded by the Government of Canada. The Task Force has developed new resources that specifically seek to enhance awareness and understanding of the Holocaust in the public sphere amongst a new generation of Canadians."
