Exercise "tolerance with regards to religious objects in taxis"

B’nai Brith Canada-Quebec welcomes new directive for taxi inspectors

MONTREAL, March 25, 2011 - B’nai Brith Canada-Quebec welcomes the out-of-court settlement between Montreal cab driver Arieh Perecowicz and municipal authorities regarding religious objects in a taxi. The deal reportedly includes specific written acknowledgment by the chief of the Montreal Taxi Bureau that drivers’ religious objects are permissible inside their cabs, as long as these objects do not constitute a safety hazard or proselytizing.

“The League for Human Rights is pleased that the Taxi Bureau has reconsidered its position and has modified its rules and regulations,” said Me Moise Moghrabi, Quebec Chair of the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada. “The municipal authorities have shown flexibility by deciding to recognize and accommodate the rights of individual taxi drivers to express their religious beliefs, in accordance with Canadian and Quebec values.” “The new directive demonstrates not only tolerance, but an understanding of the different religious elements which form the very fabric of Quebec society. We therefore applaud the Taxi Bureau's decision.”
