A country renowned for its dismal human rights record

B’nai Brith questions Rwanda’s UN Security Council Seat

Toronto, -- B’nai Brith Canada has questioned a UN system that has enabled the election of Rwanda to the Security Council. This country has been accused of numerous human rights abuses and is charged with supplying arms which fuel conflicts in neighboring countries. The Jewish human rights organization expressed dismay that a country which cannot support internal democracy, freedom of speech and human rights would be selected to deal with the problems of the world.

Frank Dimant, CEO of B’nai Brith Canada commented: “The election of Rwanda, a country renowned for its dismal human rights record, to the Security Council further points to a UN system which is broken. Rwanda has been accused by human rights groups of illegal detentions, torture, and other forms of abuse, mostly of civilians by military intelligence. “How can such a nation help to fulfill the mandate of the security council to ‘maintain peace, security and develop friendly relations among nations’?”
