Campaign weirdness: Ted Cruz makes 'Machine Gun Bacon'

I confess. I don't quite "get" what Ted Cruz is doing lately. I understand that we're still in the early phases of the campaign season, I'm aware that the issue-driven stuff hasn't really heated up yet, and I'll concede that summer months have a tendency to spawn campaign "oddities." However, I'd like to see something a bit more substantive than the following video he made for IjReview.

In it, he makes what he calls "machine gun bacon." (video below) Sure, it's fun. Most Americans like guns and they love bacon. I suppose you can argue that Cruz is appealing to pro-2nd Amendment forces here, and that's a good thing. However, Cruz needs to watch out. Between this and his "Simpsons impersonation" video he's starting to look like a kid who's doing more and more outrageous dives so that the other kids will notice him as he enters the pool. Attention is fine, and we all know that mind-share is a big part of the fight, but you want to be known for the right things. The United States is in rough shape. Everyone here at Cain HQ likes and supports Cruz but, personally, I think it's time for him to bend his flair for campaign showmanship toward the issues. "Machine gun bacon" is great - IF it's the quirky sideshow to a successful, issue-driven, campaign. If it's the only way you're getting the media to pay attention, there's a problem.
