Campus Carjacking A Reminder Days of Animal House and School Daze Are Long Gone

College campuses are no longer "safe spaces," to use a bit of liberalese.

Movies like 1978 frat guy classic, 'Animal House' and 1988's Black college masterpiece 'School Daze' capture campus life familiar to Baby Boomers and Generation Xers of varied backgrounds.

The recent carjacking at gun point suffered by a Rhodes College security officer in Tennessee ís where contemporary campus life has devolved.

Murder, shootings and mass casualty events are not uncommon occurrences.

Not anymore.

Another especially heinous campus crime was the February, 2024 rape and murder of nursing student Laken Riley during a morning run at the University of Georgia.

Colleges and universities, like other public venues, are experiencing violent crime at rates which worry safety creators concerned institutions aren't prepared to handle threats commonly associated with proverbial "bad sides of town."

Crime today makes anywhere, no matter how sedate, a potential "bad side of town" as peaceful places are increasingly targeted.
This campus carjacking reminded me of a shocking 2007 case near a university I attended where a former dean I knew and his wife were carjacked.

Such incidents are harsh reminders that safer days of 'Animal House' and 'School Daze' are long gone.

Sadly, higher education and high crime rates now frequently intersect.
