Cardinal Burke: Pope Francis is increasing the confusion in the Church Cardinal Burke, who is a member of the Apostolic Signatura, has publicly lamented Pope Francis' denial of hell and the immortality of the soul as allegedly expressed last week during his interview with Eugenio Scalfari. The Vatican has neither repudiated the "erroneous and even heretical ideas" attributed to Francis, nor has it done anything to reassert the Church's teachings on hell for the sake of Catholics everywhere that have been scandalized by this.
The news about Francis' denial of eternal punishment in hell should come as no surprise, since the pope in his Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia clearly states, "No one can be condemned forever." (AL 297) Denying hell is serious, since the purpose of Christ's Sacrifice was to save mankind from the fires of hell. If there is no hell to be saved from, it implies that Christ's Sacrifice was in vain. And when we consider that this news of Francis' denial hit the fan on Holy Thursday—the day on which Christ instituted his Sacrifice as an ongoing Sacrifice for the sins of man—it appears that what we may be looking at is an insidious attack on the Passion of Christ. Unless Francis himself can come forward and repudiate this report about what he said and clarify that eternal punishment in hell is real, he will go on record as erring from the Faith. According to Cardinal Burke, if a pope were to "formally profess heresy he would cease, by that act, to be the Pope." (CWR, December 2016)
