Causeway Rocks Up To No. 3 on ‘Wonders’ List

Northern Ireland’s famous Giant’s Causeway has been named as one of the 50 must-see wonders of the world, in a new book published by Lonely Planet.

And in a top 10 list picked from the book by travel experts, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, comes in at number three, behind Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe/Zambia and the Great Rift Valley, Ethiopia, but ahead of India’s Taj Mahal.

The World’s Great Wonders lists both manmade and natural creations from around the world, explaining how they were built or formed and encouraging travellers to put them on their list of unmissable sights. The Giant’s Causeway, formed by volcanic activity some 60 million years ago, is one of the most popular visitor attractions in Ireland, welcoming over 750,000 people every year to see its unique hexagonal basalt columns. The story of the Causeway’s formation is told in the attraction’s state-of-the-art visitors’ centre, which is built with walls of glass and basalt columns to fit seamlessly into the landscape.

Inside the award-winning building, the latest interactive technology allows visitors to explore the fascinating geological history of the site and also hear the magical legend of Finn McCool, the giant who is said to have created the Causeway as a stepping stone to reach his enemy in Scotland. The giant’s influence, and the locals’ love of a good story, is reflected in the names of a number of the Causeway’s most popular formations including The Giant’s Boot, The Wishing Chair, The Camel, Giant’s Granny and The Organ. There are four colour-coded trails at the Giant’s Causeway, to suit walkers of every ability and families with young children. All afford breath-taking views of the spectacular north Antrim coastline. Guided tours are available by arrangement. The Giant’s Causeway is part of the magnificent Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland, which has been designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty and one of the world’s great road trips. www.ireland.com www.nationaltrust.org.uk/giants-causeway
