Charlie Rangel thinks college should be free

Ethically-challenged New York Rep. Charlie Rangel appeared yesterday on Martin Bashir's MSNBC program. There, he praised President Obama's recent education proposal that would place restrictions on Universities and Students seeking federal financial aid. He told fill-in host Joy Reid that he strongly supports the accountability that he's convinced Obama's new plan will provide.

Then he said college should be free for everyone. "There is no reason why a young person should have to pay for a college education," Rangel claims, "because who does it benefit except the nation? Who are we competing against? Not ourselves, but China and other industrialized countries, they decide what they need, and they provide the incentives. Here we don’t have nurses and doctors, and then when a person gets out of health school, I mean out of medical school, they can’t get the money to pay off their debt. It doesn’t make sense.” In other words, Rangel thinks "a nation" should be giving free rides to those students who select government-sanctioned degrees. Of course, when you're a big-government leftist like Rangel, you don't care that "free" is a synonym for "taxpayer funded." All that matters is that you confiscate money from the masses in order to give it to the federally-selected few. That it's completely unsustainable, unnecessary, and an example of the worst kind of social engineering is irrelevant. The point is that the government gets to pick its favorites. ...and, as always, it's "for the good of the nation."
