We must find the courage to continue the struggle lest evil win. We are up to the task. We only need to cultivate our courage

Courage is Essential

Courage
It looks like Republicans have recovered the US House, with a shot at keeping the Senate balanced. Unfortunately, the Biden regime is still in power, so much damage can yet be done. There is a special danger in the next two months as the Left engages in last minute desperate acts to emplace as much of their agenda as they can. Not a time to relax This is not the time to relax our vigilance nor slacken our efforts. We cannot afford complacency. Much mischief can still be done in the two months before a new Congress is convened.
As but one example, although the Ukraine situation seems to be less urgent as Russia withdraws to let its formidable ally, winter, subdue Ukraine, our administration could still use that conflict as an excuse to bring us into war and assume wartime powers that would postpone formation of the new Congress. We can hope things will not progress so far, but we cannot underestimate the lengths a desperate Left will proceed along. The need for courage Conservatism in this country and throughout the world is in crisis now, in large measure because we have not spoken strongly about certain issues. We have engaged in self censorship, sometimes from fear of reprisal through cancellation or financial measures, sometimes by not wishing to provoke controversy, and sometimes from a misguided sense of "that isn't what good people do". Whatever the reason, we have left the field open to our enemies, and they have shown no restraint in taking advantage. It requires a measure of courage to speak against the Left. They are vicious, ruthless, and are playing for keeps in their quest to establish full control of our lives and society. I have not considered myself to be a particularly courageous individual, but have had to learn courage in my commitment to science. To be a true scientist, one must be willing to follow wherever the data may lead, and that sometimes leads to places we really would prefer not to go. We are not born with courage Courage can be learned. We can push the boundaries of our comfort and usually find them to be elastic barriers that once moved, give us new room to operate. Phrases like "screw your courage to the sticking place", and "might as well be hung for a sheep as for a lamb" and "better to get forgiveness than permission" have been useful at times. Perhaps now is our opportunity to stand up to the bullies of the Left, such as google or the Deep State, to see just how elastic those boundaries might be. That leads to the question of what do we want? Do you want to be champions of individual freedom, restorers of the rule of law and a strong Constitution, one of a handful of brave challengers, or would we prefer to be one of the whiney complainers about how the meanies on the Left are so unfair - Putting forth our litany of injustices full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Either way is up to us. One way is risky but rewarding, the other is safe but unsatisfying. It is up to us

Many forms of courage Physical courage such as we see in battle is just one form. There is moral courage as well that is equally important, and possibly even more powerful. Rejecting the moral relativism of the Left, where almost any act, any harm can be rationalized as acceptable under the "proper" circumstances. We need courage to recognize injustices done in the name of some collective fantasy, and to stand in opposition. As but one example, should we stand by as young children are mutilated for life in order to serve some nebulous concept of "gender identity", long before they can understand the consequences of such mutilation? Courage is contagious We learn from others and gather strength in numbers. Just as with football, we do not put a single player on the field and expect them to win the game. Not only is there the strength of numbers, but each player encourages and supports the others, and is supported in turn. During the protests against CRT instruction, many found courage to express their objections from the support of other concerned parents. As more joined, the objections became stronger and more effective. The French general and leader Charles de Gaulle said that when he wanted to accomplish something both important and difficult, he would announce his intentions publically. He said it made him much more effective as there would be thousands who would both support him and hold him accountable.

The courage of Thanksgiving As we come upon this uniquely American time of Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to reflect on the courage of those who came before us. Many of our ancestors suffered enormous hardship to come to this country, as well as in dealing with the difficulties of ordinary life. Wars, droughts, disease, accident, storms, floods, and a range of other challenges confronted them, but these ordinary people found within themselves the courage to do extraordinary things. They were no different than we are today. The same genes that lived in them were passed on to us. Their potential for courage lives within us today, available to be called upon to meet our own challenges. A kind of war Clearly we are in perilous times, no less dangerous to our country than those times of active war. We are now at a war of words, ideas, and ideals, fighting for hearts and minds, against a relentless enemy. We cannot win if we restrict ourselves only to those weapons and tactics that our enemy allows. Raids by the FBI of as many as 50 conservative Republicans in the last few weeks have borne out concerns. Worse is yet to come. Appeasement will not protect us - it can only delay the outcome and make it easier for the enemies of our liberty to succeed. We have the lessons of history with Chamberlain and Hitler, among so many others to draw on. Should we suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or by opposing, end them? The question is universal. How shall we answer?

The courage to overcome evil Those who would seek to control us must first defeat our courage. They do this by sowing fear. In recent times, they have spread the fear of a relatively mild disease to justify elimination of basic rights, to destroy our livelihoods and communities, and to force the acceptance of an experimental agent misidentified as a vaccine. They have promoted the fear of an environmental crisis to destroy our economies, to rob us of the freedom provided by abundant energy, and to promote dependence. They promote crime and disorder to encourage us to call upon them to make us safe. Only if we call upon our own courage to resist can we stop this evil. Just as with the parents opposing indoctrination of their children, so can we join together and find ways to oppose the slow creep of evil throughout our society. Yes, the Left will oppose us because we threaten them and their plans. They will try to convince us that we are the problem. We must have the courage to think clearly and challenge their lies. This struggle between those who seek to control and those who would resist such control has gone on throughout human history. We are unlikely to have a decisive victory for good any time soon, but we must find the courage to continue the struggle lest evil win. We are up to the task. We only need to cultivate our courage.
