Creating "Safe Fun" During Mardi Gras

Protectors and event planners have their work cut out for them during Carnival season, otherwise known as Mardi Gras.

Inclusive. Effusive. Streets, sidewalks, nightspots and "TPS"-temporary party spots- host huge, happy crowds in various states of inebriation.

I've noticed most Mardi Gras locations have little if any protectors on site and rely upon planners and krewe-marching group-members, which is a testament to good intentions of all involved.

Last Mardi Gras saw targeted break-ins dampen people's spirits

A number use a hybrid approach of off duty police securing the parameter while krewe members and security handle entry and exit duties.

No weapons searches. No metal detect or burly bouncers are features of this season the most part, except at clubs offering strong deterrence.

My professional concern is so much good energy in confined spaces and general vicinity provides cover for bad actors using such occasions to commit crime.

Last Mardi Gras saw targeted break-ins dampen people's spirits as rows of vehicle windows were left gaping and glass littered the pavement.

Shootings are common place along parade routes and outside venues, as are armed robberies and more theft than you can shake a stick at.

I've coordinated safe fun for several Mardi Gras krewes and know firsthand how much they prize participant well being.

They want someone or a group of someones actively aware while folks are busy having the time of their lives.

I offer myself as that someone and make sure the entry point is secure, personal boundaries are respected, area is constantly assessed and prioritize that anyone waiting for ride share is safely picked up- an often overlooked dimension of modern event security.

Creating "safe fun" during Mardi Gras means becoming something of a boring Brother like me by keeping watch for signs of bad intentions amid a good time.
