In the final analysis, it comes down to the fact that both parties want big government

Dateline D.C.: In danger of killing the golden goose

And the debt battle continues. While the White House offers threats that grandma and grandpa might not get their Social Security checks in August, the republicans say there’s plenty of money to keep grandma and grandpa well fed and able to pay the rent.

Right now, I’m not in love with either side. Neither knows what will happen but each is blaming the other for whatever comes down the road. In the meantime, the unemployment rate inches up toward 10 percent, the debt continues to climb, and everyone in every program has their hand out to make sure their sacred cow doesn’t come to an ignoble end. The difference between the two parties is that the dems want to keep spending money on far too many programs to placate far too many people to keep their base happy, regardless of the cost. Let’s raise the debt ceiling. What the heck! The American people will pay the bill. I can just see them rubbing their hands together in glee as they envision themselves “harvesting” the golden goose. On the other hand, the republicans want to keep the programs in place, but in a “responsible way.” That means they just want to fund everything. Keep government big, but let’s all just pay for it. Again, picture these guys with the golden goose. I question why we want to continue fund wasteful and fraudulent federal programs that have outlived their usefulness or that have never had any real utilitarian value. The republicans want just as much big government as the democrats, otherwise, they’d be chomping at the bit to do away with a lot of the items that spend so much of our money. They just want to be able to pay for it. So when the republicans say they want smaller government, I can’t believe them anymore. In the final analysis, it comes down to the fact that both parties want big government. The republicans just want to be able to pay for it. And the end result is, if they’re not careful, they’ll both end up killing the golden goose.
