Deranged septuagenarian Senator claims Koch Brothers are the 'main cause of climate change'

Harry Reid's Koch fixation knows no bounds. No matter what the issue, no matter what the topic, if Harry is in on the discussion, he's sure to blame the Koch's. ...Despite having taken donations from them.

Our most recent example is a doozy. Yesterday, Reid took to the floor of the Senate where he issued a shocking proclamation. Not only are the Koch Brothers evil "zillionaires," they're also the main cause of global cooling, global warming, "climate change."

“The overwhelming evidence proves that pollution is causing climate change. But Mr. President, no one has to take my word for it - including the multi-zillionaire Koch brothers - the two richest people in the world. While the Koch brothers admit to not being experts on the matter, these billionaire oil tycoons are certainly experts at contributing to climate change. That’s what they do very well. They are one of the main causes of this - not a cause, one of the main causes.”

First of all, the Koch brothers will probably be disappointed to learn that they are not "the two richest people in the world." That honor goes to perpetual Democrat donor Bill Gates, and Carlos Slim - a Mexican investor who sunk a lot of cash into the New York Times. As for the claim that the Kochs are "the main cause" of climate change, The Daily Caller has the math:

Left-wing and climate blogs declared that the Koch brothers’ industrial endeavors produced a total of about 300 million tons of carbon in 2011 — a number impossible to confirm and likely inflated, given their inherent bias against the Kochs. But even if 300 million tons is accurate, it represents just 5 percent of the 5.4 billion tons of carbon emitted in 2011 by the United States, according to EU estimates.

Remember, these probably-inflated numbers give us only 5% of U.S. carbon. China is now the world's leading carbon producer, and it has been for some time. Then, of course, we would have to factor in every other business and country on the planet (where, once again, the Kochs are not the richest people). So how much of the world's Carbon are those monstrous Koch brothers responsible for? When taken worldwide, Koch Industries produced just 0.89 percent of the total carbon emissions in 2011. Oh, "Those numbers are too old" you say? "Use some newer numbers" you say? OK. From the Washington Post:

In his remarks, Reid referred to a 2013 study by the Political Economy Research Institute of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst—the Greenhouse 100 Polluters Index. U-Mass “ranked Koch Industries as one of the nation’s biggest air and water polluters, period. In one year Koch Industries released 31 million pounds of toxic air,” Reid said. “How much is that? It’s more than Dow Chemical, Exxon Mobil and General Electric combined emitted. They are the champions.” Actually, the report lists Koch Industries at 24 million metric tons of greenhouse gas (CO2 equivalent emissions), which puts the company at 27th on the list, responsible for 0.36 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Exxon Mobil landed in 14th place, with 39 million tons, Dow Chemical was 44th with 15 million tons and GE was not on the list. Combined, those companies actually had more than double the emissions of Koch Industries.

Harry may want to take a closer look at that list, since The United States Government comes in at an impressive number four. So, even if we assume that "man made climate change" is something more than an anti-capitalist talking point for Reid and his left-wing goon squad, he's wrong on all counts. ...And he's lying about the reports he's citing. ...And he's completely obssessed. ...And he's making himself look like an insane crackpot.
