Do the Right Thing

As I was watching the latest episode of Blue Bloods, the first family of TV cops, I was struck by something that was said by the character Jamie Reagan: “Do the right thing.” To me, as simple a statement as it is, it is also extremely profound. What would the world look like if everyone adopted a “do the right thing” philosophy for their lives? Probably a bit different than the world we see today. However, I do understand where human beings are philosophically, and I haven’t lost my grip on that reality. But, what if?

What is the right thing? Of course, that depends on the circumstances of any situation. However, if you are a follower of Judeo-Christian values, you certainly have the grounding to determine what the right thing is in a given situation. If you do what you know is right, rarely will you drift off course.

If you have drifted away from regular church attendance because of social pressure, do the right thing, and re-engage with your church family. If you were once churched, it isn’t a great leap to acquaint yourself with the solid values that will put you back on the path of knowing what is right and what is wrong. First, do the right thing, and go back to church.

"Devotion to the truth is the hallmark of morality; there is no greater, nobler, more heroic form of devotion than the act of a man who assumes the responsibility of thinking." ~ Ayn Rand
"Truth is a tyrant—the only tyrant to whom we can give our allegiance. The service of truth is a matter of heroism." ~ John F. Kennedy

Both Rand and Kennedy expressed a very deep commitment to the truth. Do the right thing, and commit yourself to the truth, always. Often it will be uncomfortable, but anything less is entering the evil realm of a false reality. Most important always, always, always—that’s an absolute, be truthful with yourself. That is doing the right thing.

"People don't want to think. And the deeper they get into trouble, the less they want to think. But by some sort of instinct, they feel that they ought to and it makes them feel guilty. So they'll bless and follow anyone who gives them a justification for not thinking." ~ Ayn Rand

This is a problem in America today. There are people in all generations that have the ability to think, but some would rather not. Then there are two or three generations where most of them were not taught how to think, but only what to think. Those who won’t or can’t think are lost causes and likely have minimal ability to determine what is right or wrong until someone tells them, so they just simply follow the crowd they run with. Sadly, they outnumber those of us who can and will think.

"Reason is not automatic. Those who deny it cannot be conquered by it. Do not count on them. Leave them alone." ~ Ayn Rand

To paraphrase Rand, those who can’t see or simply refuse to see cannot be reasoned with no matter how good the evidence, the facts, or the truth. They are lost causes, so don’t frustrate yourself trying to change them; simply leave them alone. Do the right thing by focusing on those people who are seeing and are reasonable. These are the elements of We the People who are going to have to step up and save America and the Free World, if it can still be saved.

“Posterity! [that would be us] You will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make a good use of it.” ~ John Adams
"It is infinitely better to have a few good men than many indifferent ones." ~ George Washington
"It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men." ~ Samuel Adams

"As long as men are free to speak, a small, rational minority will always prevail over an irrational majority." ~ Ayn Rand

Message to all government officials who in their oath of office are sworn to protect, preserve, and defend the Constitution of the United States and/or your state: Are you, in fact, meeting your promise and obligation to do so? If you have been required to violate that oath in any way, what are you going to do? Your choice is to be part of the solution or be part of the problem. Where does your higher duty lie, with your supervisor or your duty to the constitution? In most oaths of office, the first obligation is to the constitution and other commitments come secondary. Do the right thing. If you have gotten this far in this article, you know exactly what the right thing to do is.

“Show me a man [or woman] that gets rich by being a politician, and I'll show you a crook.” ~ Harry S. Truman

"There can be no compromise on basic principles. There can be no compromise on moral issues. There can be no compromise on matters of knowledge, of truth, of rational conviction." ~ Ayn Rand

Message to government officials who have the responsibility of providing security for other government officials and who in their oath of office have sworn to protect, preserve, and defend the Constitution of the United States and/or your state: Like the group above, your first and highest duty is to protect, preserve, and defend the Constitution. Your secondary obligation is to the person you protect and to your supervisor. Are you meeting your primary responsibility? Is the person you are assigned to operating within in his/her obligation to protect, preserve, and defend the Constitution? Or is the person to whom you are assigned one of Harry Truman’s “crooks.” Remember where your primary sworn obligation lies. Do the right thing.

Nearly every one of us has conflicting issues when we have to make the choice to do the right thing. Nobody ever told you that life was easy. But overall, in the long term, doing the right thing will bring the best results. The principles of Judeo-Christian values are the bedrock of civilization. In cities in America and around the world, where these values have been abandoned, evil, chaos, and lawlessness prevails to the detriment of the majority of its citizens. Any government that sanctions such chaos and lawlessness is evil in and of itself.

"Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom." ~ John F. Kennedy
"If you do not take an interest in the affairs of your government, then you are doomed to live under the rule of fools."Plato
"A Patriot is someone who stands for his country always, and for his government when it is deserved." ~ Mark Twain
"The high office of the President has been used to foment a plot to destroy the American's freedom and before I leave office, I must inform the citizens of this plight." ~ John F. Kennedy
"By calling attention to 'a well regulated militia,' 'the security of the nation,' and the right of each citizen 'to keep and bear arms,' our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy... The Second Amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic civilian-military relationships in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason I believe the Second Amendment will always be important." ~ John F. Kennedy

Much of what is going on in America and the free world is not rational. We see examples of that every day. Rational people see and understand that what they are looking at is wrong or, at least, isn’t right. The majority of people see the same thing and don’t believe their lying eyes and ears and are willing to believe anything they are told no matter how irrational it might be.

"Do not help your jailers to pretend that their jail is your natural state of existence." ~ Ayn Rand
"The Founding Fathers were neither passive, death-worshiping mystics nor mindless, power-seeking looters; as a political group they were a phenomenon unprecedented in history: they were thinkers who were also men of action." ~ Ayn Rand

Do the right thing. Join with others and do the right thing. If your children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren are not to be doomed to slavery, do the right thing.
