Expunge the Sin of Cowardice on this Covid-19 Memorial Day

Expunge the Sin of Cowardice on this Covid-19 Memorial DayThe problem with being a coward is not knowing of the cowardice and bravery being the only antidote. Our National Anthem, 'The Star Spangled Banner', calls America: the Land of the Free, and the Home of the Brave. People need courage to face ordeals, whether having to survive COVID-19 or dealing with draconian edicts and “quarantine,” which I prefer to call “involuntary confinement.”

Cowardice is a poison that destroys morale and combat readiness

Memorial Day is a good day to eradicate the sin of cowardice, but all we receive from the Media is hysteria, and from power-hungry governors and mayors, lunatic “public health” emergency decrees. The beaches in Long Island are open on Memorial Day Weekend, for example, but not those in New York City. People are permitted to shop at Walmart, but not get a haircut. There is a war on sanity and common sense, far worse than the battle against COVID-19. The Left hates the “we’re on a war-time footing,” language of President Trump, who has called the virus, an “invisible enemy,” which is fine either way. But now more than ever, we need people of courage. Those without courage ought to remain “sheltering in place,” and let everybody else go about their business. Cowardice is the infectious disease known as fear. Isolate the vulnerable and the afraid; confine THEM, and not US. This is the solution to the fear pandemic. Whatever happened to Democrats such as President Franklin Roosevelt, who said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” In the Bible, Deuteronomy 20, 1-10, the officers of the Hebrew army addressed their soldiers before the battle to enter and conquer the Land of Israel. The leaders said to their charges: “Who is the man who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house. And let him not melt the heart of his brothers, like his heart.” Your cowardly heart affects my heart. Dig? Living through COVID-19 and the fear contagion, one can see why the military would shoot deserters and cowards. Cowardice is a poison that destroys morale and combat readiness.

The first rule of courage is that you cannot be afraid to die

The first rule of courage is that you cannot be afraid to die. This comes from belief. If you are a Christian, you know that Jesus defeated death. If you are Jew, you know this world is merely an antechamber to the Next World, the World of Truth. America is a Judeo-Christian nation, founded on the Good Book, the Roman Republic, the Jewish commonwealth in the desert, and the Iroquois Confederacy. Maybe that is where more of the bravery entered our bloodstream and DNA, from the Indians? We are Americans and we want to solve COVID-19 as Americans with freedom and liberty, especially on Memorial Day, where we remember those who paid the ultimate price. We liberated the world from Nazism and Communism, and we will contain COVID-19 as best we can realizing that we still haven’t cured the common cold or a host of other diseases, such as cancer and heart disease that kill far many more Americans than the virus ever will. The Spanish Flu of 1918-19 killed 20 to 50 million people across the globe, among them an estimated 400,000 to 675,000 Americans, but that was at a time of near primitive medical capability to combat diseases. No matter how bad or not bad one thinks of COVID-19, no matter what one’s political perspective, we need not be afraid. We need to be calm, brave, and wise by bringing our experience to bear in these trying times for us, our families, and our country. America competes in business, sports, and entertainment. We “Won’t Back Down,” the American singer Tom Petty wrote in 1989, when we still believed in such powerful words and imagery. We beat the Russians in hockey in 1980, shocking the world in the Miracle on Ice in Lake Placid, New York, where you are now not allowed to go outside without the permission of Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The runner, Dave Wottle of Ohio, who you probably have never heard of, wearing a dorky baseball cap, came from last place to win the 800 meters at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympic Games. Go watch it on youtube; it’s amazing and inspiring. The two Michaels, Jordan and Jackson, nobody did it or has done it better ever, both black Americans who dominated internationally.

Everybody will contract COVID-19; it is that contagious, but nearly 100 percent of healthy people will survive it

We “flattened” the COVID-19 curve, which looks a lot like the same curve we see every flu season, just look at the charts. We can follow the rules when we must, but we will never surrender. Everybody will contract COVID-19; it is that contagious, but nearly 100 percent of healthy people will survive it, some with worse symptoms than others. No unlimited number of tests is going to keep everybody safe and alive. That is impossible and not reality. But companies are already finding treatments and vaccines, bringing hope. We can be smart and calm and serene and persevere against this virus without running around with our hair on fire. Who is brave today? How about Karl Manke, a 77-year-old Michigan barber, who said he had no income and would keep his shop open “until Jesus comes.” Last Wednesday, the Wicked Witch of the Midwest, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, suspended his barber’s license. Manke is an American who believes in what others may call Divine Providence, or Heavenly Father or Nature’s G-d. Manke’s Creator placed bravery into his head and heart and it went out from there. Thanks to our Founders, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution, Americans get to worship in the way they see fit and call the Supreme Being by the name they choose. American soldiers died for that. Grateful American on Memorial Day, signing off.
