Because Donald Sterling!

Fifty U.S. senators (all Democrats) sign letter to NFL demanding Redskins name change

The Benghazi investigation is a partisan waste of time, but this demands the attention of half the U.S. Senate? Of course, when you consider the half we're talking about, it's really no surprise. Take it away, ESPN:
It should tell you something when you see that the two Democrat senators form Virginia - Tim Kaine and Mark Warner - declined to sign. This might be a trendy cause in Democrat Nation, but in Redskins Nation, it's going nowhere. And why the urgency to do this in the first place? Donald Sterling! "Today, we urge you and the National Football League to send the same clear message as the NBA did: that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports," the senators write. "It's time for the NFL to endorse a name change for the Washington, D.C. football team.

"The despicable comments made by Mr. Sterling have opened up a national conversation about race relations. We believe this conversation is an opportunity for the NFL to take action to remove the racial slur from the name of one of its marquee franchises." Apparently this is how the "national conversation" works. Democrats: You're a racist! Shut up! Redskins: What? Democrats: Donald Sterling! Shut up! Of course, Donald Sterling got banned from the NBA because he expressed his views on race. I guess he's not invited to join the conversation. I'd like to think Roger Goodell will tell these 50 Democrats where they can stick their letter, but the NFL seems ruled by political correctness these days, so if I were Daniel Snyder, I'd consider investing in some tomahawks as a defense against the teepee.
