Fiorina campaign: Cruz considering Carly for VP

Team-up part 2

Yesterday on Good Morning America, ABC News' John Karl speculated that Ted Cruz needed to announce his VP pick sooner rather than later, and that person would be Carly Fiorina. Basically, the argument goes like this: Cruz is about to get trounced - again - during today's mini-super Tuesday. After the drubbing, he'll need some kind of game-changer to reverse his fortunes and aid him as he heads toward what he hopes will be a contested convention.

If things continue the way they have, the Cruz camp is worried that it will stumble into the convention like a horse with a broken ankle. Clearly, his alliance with Kasich was about as well-received as your racist uncle showing up drunk on Christmas Morning, so he needs something that will generate some media exposure and put a little gas in his campaign's tank. Now it sounds like Karl may have nailed it.
Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign is vetting Carly Fiorina as a potential running mate, THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned. According to a spokeswoman for Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO and one-time presidential candidate is being vetted by Cruz's campaign. "Normal stuff," said Sarah Isgur Flores, who served as deputy campaign manager during Fiorina's bid, when asked about the process. She added that Fiorina has met with members of the Cruz campaign and has given them financial disclosures and other documentation. Flores added that "no offers" have been made.

This makes a lot of sense. Fiorina is whip-smart, does great interviews - particularly with hostile outlets, and would be a strong ally when dealing with the delegate battle. She's a woman, which may help shore up some of Cruz's numbers, and placing her on the ticket would take attention away from today's vote as well as the Kasich kerfuffle. As a bonus, her previous battles with Trump will also give Cruz a little ammo he can use against Trump. Frankly, there's little downside here. You can make an argument that if Cruz is heading for a contested convention, he will have thrown away his biggest bargaining chip before it begins. However, he has to do something to breathe life into his candidacy, and he has to do it fast. Fiorina is a great choice, and she should do just that.
