Hilarious, brilliant or preposterous: it’s hard to know exactly in which category Goldman Sach’s latest hiring falls. Two weeks after the Brexit vote, the American investment bank – to my mind, still one of the best and most successful companies in the world – has recruited José Manuel Barroso, the former president of the European Commission, as the chairman of its international operations, a non-exec, advisory role.
Goldman has form in hiring international bureaucrats: the previous holder was Peter Sutherland, a former European Commissioner and ex boss of the World Trade Organisation. --
