In many ways, Al Gore is like the charismatic preacher who mesmerized his congregation every Sunday, but during the week, ministered privately to the needs of neglected housewives to satisfy his own appetite. While sermonizing before the Nobel Committee - and an international television audience - Gore described the hellfire and brimstone of global warming damnation, and pointed the way to planetary salvation: the world must have a mandatory “cap-and-trade” regime, he said, administered by the United Nations.
Privately, however, away from the television cameras, Gore gobbles up more fossil fuel in a month than is consumed by entire villages in undeveloped nations. He justifies his own outrageous carbon appetite by purchasing “carbon credits” through a brokerage firm in which he is a principal, as an example he wants to force others to follow.
He repeated his 1992 declaration: protection of the environment must become the principle around which all societies are organized. He did not repeat, however, the 1992 recognition that such a reorganization would require a “wrenching transformation” of civilization.
Were Gore’s wildest claims of global catastrophe absolutely certain, the remedy he proposes would be the worst possible way to confront it. Gore, and most of the international community, wants a U.N. treaty that gives power to an international body to set emission limits on developed nations, and enforce monetary penalties for non-compliance which would be redistributed to developing nations such as China, India, Brazil and others.
This method would give to an international body not simply the power to limit the output - emissions; it would also convey the power to limit the input - available energy supplies. Without abundant, available energy, prosperity in developed nations would plummet. This, of course, is the goal of international socialists who see social “equity” as one of the highest objectives. Environmental protection, and a managed global economy are the other objectives of what is called “
sustainable development.”
An international body empowered to control the use of energy, the use of natural resources, as well as economic activity, would be a hell far worse than anything that could possibly result from a free society, pursuing individual happiness, in a free economy.
Like the charismatic preacher who paints vivid pictures of the consequences of sin, Al Gore and his ilk, preach their gospel of doom and gloom to scare their admirers into actions that benefit only the preachers - not the action takers. Global warming has become a multi-billion dollar industry that enriches the preachers at the International Panel on Climate Change, the bureaucrats at the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, thousands of scientists who feed at the global warming trough, and thousands of delegates who are paid by the U.N. to attend these endless conferences at locations such as Bali, Kyoto, and other exotic destinations.
These conferences have absolutely nothing to do with determining what impact, if any, humans may have on the global climate. Since the first meeting of the U.N. Framework Convention on climate Change in 1995, the goal has been to create an international power regime to control the use of fossil fuel, and to redistribute the wealth of the nations that have grown rich by using fossil fuel energy. At the
1997 Kyoto conference, Al Gore deliberately ignored explicit instructions from the Senate, and accepted emission limits that even President Clinton said would not be acceptable. These meetings disallow dissent, and
deny access to media, and others, who fail to support the objectives of the international body.
Had Al Gore been elected in 2000, the United States would most certainly be under the thumb on an international energy-dispensing body today. Should someone of his global warming faith be elected in 2008, along with a willing Congress, the United States will most certainly be subjected to the whims of this international socialist regime.
Ironically, none of the remedies proclaimed by Gore and his followers will have any appreciable effect on global climate. Gore’s rhetoric spews like what he calls “70-million tons of global warming pollution” into the air each day. What he does not say is that the portion produced by human economic activity is relatively insignificant compared to the natural flow of carbon dioxide from the breathing of every mammal on earth, and decay of vegetation, and the eruption of volcanos and all other natural functions. What he calls pollution - carbon dioxide - gives life to all vegetation. It would be the same as a stupid person calling oxygen pollution. Animals, including humans can’t live without oxygen - produced by plants; plants can’t live without carbon dioxide - produced by animals.
This planet has undergone periods that were much warmer, and much colder, than current global temperatures. Neither Al Gore, nor any other human, or collection of humans, had anything to do with those climatic changes. All of the hoopla, proposed regulations, laws, and international treaties are essentially meaningless against the global climate system that human intelligence can’t begin to fathom. We should simply be grateful that we live in a period that is hospitable to human life and make the most of it.
