Green Climate Plans Rely Much Too Heavily on China

Green Climate Plans Rely Much Too Heavily on ChinaPeople disagree on climate science and the magnitude and effects of climate change. That said, there is one thing which we should all be able to agree: Joe Biden's climate plan will put America at the mercy of its superpower rival, China. 1 The Biden Administration is pursuing a 'Back Door' Climate Plan that would bypass Congress. When you control Congress and the White House, why do you need to use a backdoor to begin with? With so much zealotry behind the net-zero by 2050, it is vital to take a step back and consider the national interest implications of these proposed policies, reports Robert Hefner. 2

Renewable energy facts

Here are renewable energy facts:
  • Five of the world's top 10 wind turbine manufacturers are Chinese owned or operated.
  • Nine of the world's top 10 solar panel manufacturers are Chinese owned or operated.
  • More than two-thirds of the world's solar panels and one-half of wind turbines are produced in China.
  • In 1954, the United States was 100% dependent on imports for eight minerals listed in the strategic Minerals Act of 1939; today the United States is 100% reliant for 17 strategic minerals and depends on imports for over 50% of 28 widely used minerals. China is a significant source for half of those 28 minerals.
  • China is responsible for 37% of passenger electric vehicles and 99% of e-buses sold globally since 2011.
  • China controls 90% of the battery industry's cobalt supply chain.
So, any scalable adoption of wind and solar makes America more reliant upon China. 2 Joe Biden's climate agenda involves replacing the coal and gas plants powering our electrical grid with wind and solar farms. He also wants to replace gasoline powered cars, buses, and truck with electric vehicles. 1 The technologies involved in wind and solar power and electric vehicles are much more reliant than their conventional alternatives on metals and minerals including copper, lithium, manganese, cobalt, graphite, chromium, molybdenum, zinc, rare-earths and silicon.

The Middle East has oil, China has rare earths

“The Middle East has oil, China has rare earths,” Deng Xiaoping said in 1992. Nearly three decades later, the world is almost completely dependent on China for rare earth materials. They constitute key elements in large swaths of modern technology from consumer electronics to military equipment and green technology. While demand is soaring, China is virtually their worldwide exclusive producer. 3 Wind and solar technologies require about three to eight times more of a variety of materials per megawatt of electricity than coal and natural gas plants. Electric cars require about five times more of these materials than conventional cars. Where will some of these materials come from in the quantities needed? China is one of the top three locations for the mining of copper, nickel, rare-earths and lithium. When it comes to mining rare-earths, China is responsible for 60% of global extraction. But there's more to these essential materials than mining; they must be processed as well. And when it comes to processing the ores, China is the leader for all of them plus cobalt, the latter of which is mostly mined in the Congo. China processes about 35% of the global nickel supply, 40% of copper, 55% of lithium, 65% of cobalt and 85% of rare earths. 1 So thanks to its low wage and slave labor and lack of environmental regulations, China has successfully positioned itself to have a strangle hold on the global production of raw materials essential for the goal of the climate agenda.

Asians and Africans, many of them children, are being enslaved and dying in mines, refineries and factories

Asians and Africans, many of them children, are being enslaved and dying in mines, refineries and factories to obtain the minerals and metals required for the green energy technologies Democrats are mandating. 4 Research from Sheffield Hallam University in the United Kingdom reports that a single province in China produces 45 percent of the polysilicon that makes up solar panels, the majority of which are assembled in China. The polysilicon and solar panels are produced by Uyghur Muslims under a huge forced labor regime. Unless the Biden-Harris administration, other US Democratic Party leaders and the heads of other developed countries change course, child and slave labor will become even more prevalent, because each and every green energy technology they're pushing for depends on these minerals and elements. 4 Keep in mind that while Biden's goal is for the US to be at net zero emissions bu 2050, China's goal is to be the lone global superpower by 2049. Regardless of one's views on climate and energy, the bottom line is this: No wind, solar or electric vehicle policies or mandates should be enacted until a supply of the necessary raw materials can be secured and made safe from China. 1
