Nov. 4, 1920: It’s time for the world to receive its first radio commercial program

Guglielmo Marchese Marconi and the world’s first radio commercial program

Here’s something all Canadians can boast about (not that Canadians are known to boast mind you). Once again we travel through the twists and turns and waves of time which flows like a river to the shores of Montreal, Que. The date is November 4, 1920 and it’s time for the world to receive its first radio commercial program.

Here, we see, the 46-year-old father of radio, Guglielmo Marchese Marconi (1874 – 1937), beam proudly as the first commercial radio show hits the sound waves. Radio station XWA AM (Amplitude Modulation) will go down in radio history as the radio station involved in this historic event. Now, I’m sure some of the readers will claim it was Thomas Edison who invented the radio. It was Marconi's radio system which achieved widespread use, so he is often credited as the "father of radio." Now, this article is not to be confused with the first radio broadcast or when the first radio was invented. There are many different firsts in the world. This is to tell you about the first radio commercial show. Radio station CINW started as XWA reputedly the oldest station in the world. On Dec.1, 1919, experimental broadcasts continued from that date until the station began regular programming on May 20, 1920. As such, it has a claim to being the first commercial broadcaster in the world. Its call letters were changed to CFCF on November 4, 1920. I search for hours to get information on what the show was about, but to no avail. That knowledge might very well be lost in the deep dark corridors and basements of time and space. But what I can tell you is it was on Dec. 12, 1901 that Marconi, sporting a fashionable mustache, received the first transatlantic radio signal from Poldhu, England to Signal Hill, Newfoundland 3425 km away. This event can be seen on Canadian TV stations as short historical information commercial. So, Canadians were the first once again to make huge changes in this ever changing ever growing world of ours. Remember, it’s our history, our country.
