Recently I wrote an article about Hillary Clinton and one of her many scandals: Travelgate. Today, we are revisiting another scandal regarding Hillary regarding her defense of a rapist in 1975.

According to a 2008 Newsday story, by Glenn Thrush, Hillary talks about her ‘35 years of experience making change and recounted her work in the 70s on behalf of battered and neglected children and impoverished legal aid clients.’ But, what she did not talk about in her campaign speech for the presidency in 2008 was the story of a 12-year-old girl who was raped and the fact that Hillary defended the rapist, Alfred Taylor.

In an article by Tony Lee of Breitbart, he says,

“Thrush, who wrote the original article in 2008, said Clinton was in a race for the Democratic presidential nomination against Barack Obama.”

In his interview, Glenn Thrush told Lee,

“A former editor of his at Newsday in 2008 delayed and buried his story on Hillary Clinton’s defense of a child rapist because “it might have an impact. [on the 2008 presidential election].”

In the original article written by Thrush he said,

“In 1975, a 27-year-old Hillary Rodham, acting as a court-appointed attorney, attacked the credibility of a 12-year-old girl in mounting an aggressive defense for an indigent client accused of rape in Arkansas—using her child development background to help the defendant…”

Thomas Alfred Taylor, was a 41-year-old factory worker in Arkansas and was accused of raping a 12-year-old girl from a family with whom he was friendly. For his defense, he asked that a woman be appointed as his counsel in the case. Hillary Clinton was 27 years old and running the University of Arkansas legal aid clinic, when she was called by the prosecutor Mahlon Gibson, and asked to handle the rape case as a favor to him.

In Clinton’s 2003 autobiography, Living History, Hillary wrote that she balked at the assignment but eventually secured a lenient plea deal for Taylor based on forensic evidence that cast doubt on the value of semen and blood samples collected by the sheriff’s office.

In Thrush’s article, he further writes,

“However, that account leaves out a significant aspect of her defense strategy—attempting to impugn the credibility of the victim, according to a Newsday examination of court and investigative files and interviews with witnesses, law enforcement officials and the victim.”

“Rodham, records show, questioned the sixth grader’s honesty and claimed she had made false accusations in the past. She implied that the girl often fantasized and sought out “older men” like Taylor, according to a July 1975 affidavit signed “Hillary D. Rodham” in compact cursive…”

When interviewed by Newsday, the victim said,

“It’s not true, I never sought out older men—I was raped,” the woman said in an interview in the fall. Newsday is withholding her name as the victim of a sex crime.”

Thrush goes further to say,

“But the record shows that Rodham was also intent on questioning the girl’s credibility. That line of defense crystallized in a July 28, 1975, affidavit requesting the girl undergo a psychiatric examination at the university’s clinic.”

“I have been informed that the complainant is emotionally unstable with a tendency to seek out older men and to engage in fantasizing,” wrote Rodham, without referring to the source of that allegation. “I have also been informed that she has in the past made false accusations about persons, claiming they had attacked her body. Dale Gibson, the investigator, doesn’t recall seeing evidence that the girl had fabricated previous attacks…..The victim was visibly stunned when handed the affidavit by a reporter this fall. “It kind of shocks me—it’s not true,” she said. “I never said anybody attacked my body before, never in my life.”

Recordings, never heard before,  from 1983- 1987, were interviews done by Roy Reed, a reporter, originally for an Esquire magazine profile that was never published. They were released to the public in 2014. In an article written by the Washington Free Beacon, they reported,

“The recordings, which date from 1983-1987 and have never before been reported, include Clinton’s suggestion that she knew Taylor was guilty at the time. She says she used a legal technicality to plead her client, who faced 30 years to life in prison, down to a lesser charge.”

In an interview with the Daily Beast, the rape victim, now 52, accuses Clinton,

”..of intentionally lying about her in court documents, going to extraordinary lengths to discredit evidence of the rape, and later callously acknowledging and laughing about her attackers’ guilt on the recordings.”

Almost 10 years later, Hillary was talking about the case and said,

“I had him take a polygraph, which he passed - which forever destroyed my faith in polygraphs,” she added with a laugh.”

Ronald D.Rotunda, a professor of legal ethics at Chapman University told the Beacon,

”...they were hired to defend Taylor and did not have to believe he was innocent.  “Rotunda said, for a lawyer to disclose the results of a client’s polygraph and guilt is a potential violation of attorney-client privilege….“You can’t do that,” he said. “Unless the client says: ‘You’re free to tell people who you really think I’m a scumbag, and the only reason I got a lighter sentence is because you’re a really clever lawyer.’”

How could anyone forget Hillary’s tweet in September of 2015,

“To every survivor of sexual assault…You have the right to be heard. You have the right to be believed. We’re with you.” - Hillary

After reading Thrush’s article and listening to the recordings, you can come to your own conclusions about the facts surrounding the case. However, you will not soon forget that Hillary laughed about the fact she got Taylor off for raping the 12-year-old child.

Should Hillary be judged on her gender or her character?
