Hillary suddenly opposes armed deportation raids

It's hard to get to the left of Barack Obama on immigration, but one thing I guess you'd have to say for Hillary Clinton is that she's quite agile when it comes to policy positions. What difference, at this point, does it make if she once favored a trade deal? Now she opposes it. Or voted to authorize a war? She's now against it. Or thinks rape victims should be believed, since, uh, yeah, about that . . .

Hillary's position on anything depends on the day, on the poll numbers and on who she's talking to. And she can pretty well pull this off because the political media assess her not on the basis of seriousness or honestly, but on the basis of how shrewdly (according to them) she shovels this crock of **** at you. And that brings us to armed immigration raids, which you might be surprised to know the Obama Administration actually undertakes against certain groups of people. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson apparently has some sense of his actual duty remaining, and that has made him a useful foil for Bernie Sanders and Martin O'Malley, who are outraged to learn that someone in the administration is actually enforcing what's left of immigration law. But as for Hillary, well, she once defended these raids as necessary. Hey, once you've taken a position, you can't just go changing it for political expediency, right? You need to be honest and consistent because sincerely held belief is what makes you who you are, right? Just kidding!

Speaking at a forum aimed at young and minority voters in Iowa, Clinton said the raids had "sown fear and division in immigrant communities across the country. People are afraid to go to work. They are afraid to send their kids to school. They are afraid to go to the hospital, or even the grocery store." Clinton had previously drawn criticism from pro-immigration groups in 2014 when she said that unaccompanied Central American minors who had crossed the southern border should be returned to their home countries. However, on Monday she called for government-funded counsel for unaccompanied minors in immigration court, as well as more funding for asylum officers, translators and immigration judges. "We have laws and we must be guided by those laws,' Clinton said earlier, "but we shouldn’t have armed federal officers showing up at peoples’ homes, taking women and children out of their beds in the middle of the night."

Oh really. That's interesting because I seem to recall a certain other president having armed federal officers show up at someone's home in Miami, taking a child out of a family member's arms in the middle of the night, and forcibly sending the child to communist Cuba. Which president was that? I'm pretty sure it was the same one Juanita Broaddrick accused of rape. Of course, as you will recall from looking at the photo above, we're talking about the Elian Gonzalez raid - the one in which Bill Clinton's attorney general, Janet Reno, ordered then-six-year-old Elian taken from his family and returned to Cuba at Fidel Castro's insistence because the boy had supposedly been taken here illegally in a family dispute. That was hardly a case of some sneaky illegal migrant dashing across the border. The U.S. has long had a policy of granting asylum to Cubans, and while Elian couldn't be called a political asylum-seeker at 6, none of his other family members were here illegally - which is why only the boy and no one else was taken in the raid. There was no reason in the name of law enforcement or national security that Elian had to be forced back to Cuba. But Clinton sent armed federal officers in the middle of the night to do so anyway. You can try to defend Hillary here by pointing out that she, not Bill, is running for president. But in order for that defense to work, you'd have to believe three implausible things: 1. That she'd actually be willing to critizie the Elian Gonzalez raid, which you know she wouldn't; 2. That she'd be a plausible candidate for president if she wasn't Bill's wife, which you know she wouldn't; and 3. That she'd actually run the country if she was elected, which she wouldn't because she has neither the skill nor the inclination to perform such a difficult job. Two for the price of one, suckers. You elect Hillary, we get to listen to all her shrieking and obfuscations while Bill actually runs the show. You do realize this, yes? It's the only reason she's kept him around all this time. Because she wants a turn at being president but she can't acttually do the job - and both of them know it. As for this crap about the immigration raids, don't worry. The next time she's in front of an audience that's concerned about illegal immigration, she'll change her position again. She's so shrewd! Aren't you impressed?
