But we still live in this broken and hurting world, sometimes facing what feels like insurmountable challenges. As Rocky Balboa put it, "The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows" (Stallone, 2006).
The Lord told us plainly, "In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world" (John 16:33 MSG). Life will not always turn out as we would like. Repeating a platitude like "everything happens for a reason" misses what’s actually true: behind all of it stands a sovereign God who "works to help those people who love him. He uses everything that happens to them to bring something good. He does this for those people that He has chosen to serve Him" (Romans 8:28, Easy English Bible).
When Jesus told His disciples, "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light," He was first speaking to people crushed by an impossible obligation--the burden of the law as defined in Jewish oral tradition, as interpreted by the Pharisees of Christ’s day. No one could manage to keep all of these requirements, nor carry the weight of these religious obligations, though many pretended otherwise. That same rest He offered from religious striving (see Matthew 11:28) extends to every other weight we carry, whether the law we’re failing to keep is written in a book or written by our own expectations of ourselves.
Jesus said His "yoke" is easy. What does that mean? We are invited to take up Christ’s "yoke"--His offer of new life, of being "born from above" (John 3:3). Working out our own plans only leaves us in despair; we strive and try harder and only grow more frustrated. Maybe you compare yourself to someone whose kids never get into trouble, or who seems to have life all put together. The truth is no one has it all together--even the wealthiest families have children who don’t obey and marriages that don’t work.
